Video and photography for a cancer center's communications team

At VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, I was the primary photographer and videographer on the Executive Communications and Marketing and Public Relations team. I worked with members of the team to plan, shoot, edit, and deliver the stories that explain what the center does, who it helps, and raise awareness and support for those impacted by cancer.

The goal

Support Massey's communications office in promoting the center's scientific highlights, clinical advancements, and work in the community, with content built for the audiences and platforms where those stories need to land.

What I did

  • Produced patient and provider stories, research spotlights, and event coverage, running the full pipeline from planning and scouting through capture, editing, color, audio, motion graphics, and delivery.
  • Set up and directed on-location interviews with lighting, sound, and multiple cameras, often with people who aren't professional performers.
  • Recorded all-day conference sessions for the Executive Communications team.
  • Worked on YouTube channel strategy, benchmarking other leading institutions' channels to find what to model for greater reach.
  • Edited, delivered, and helped grow the Real Cancer Talk podcast, including show notes and SEO.
  • Partnered with VCU Athletics on a season of events honoring cancer survivors: shot the interviews and b-roll for two survivor video stories, edited the first cut of one, and photographed the on-court halftime programs where the stories played on the jumbotron.
  • Photographed facilities, clinical spaces, headshots, and campus exteriors, often in challenging light.

The result

  • Over 25 publicly published videos on YouTube from 2025–2026, including patient stories, event coverage, and research spotlights.
  • Over 50 podcast episodes created and published, reaching over 1,200 listeners in the first year.
